Stacked pull requests
GitHub stacked pull requests are now generally available. The feature matters for teams working on large changes because it allows those changes to be divided into smaller, focused pull requests that can be reviewed independently and merged together.
General availability also brings improvements intended to make stacks easier to create, review, and merge. One of the main changes concerns how approvals are handled when a stack must be updated without changing its code.
Approvals stay in place
Approvals now remain in place for unchanged code. If an otherwise unchanged stack is updated because its base branch, such as main, has moved ahead, Rebase stack preserves existing approvals.
This behavior also applies in repositories configured to dismiss stale approvals. As a result, updating the stack against a newer state of its base branch does not remove approvals from code that has not changed. Rebased commits also stay signed.
These changes address both the review and merge stages of working with stacks. Reviewers can retain approvals for unchanged code, while the commits produced by rebasing retain their signatures.
Public preview results
According to GitHub, repositories using stacks during the public preview recorded a 9% increase in merged code compared with peer repositories. GitHub also says that more than two-thirds of the top 1% of repositories now use stacked pull requests.
Those repositories saw a 5% improvement in time-to-merge, according to the announcement. The figures accompany the move from public preview to general availability and reflect usage during the preview period.
Smaller, focused changes
The central workflow remains breaking a large change into smaller pull requests. Each part can be reviewed independently, while the related pull requests can ultimately be merged together.
With general availability, GitHub is pairing that workflow with preserved approvals for unchanged code and signed rebased commits. The release follows feedback and input provided during the preview period.

When reviewing a big code change, what changes in our day-to-day work? Can we split it up and still bring it together later?
GitHub now lets teams split large changes into smaller, focused pull requests. Each can be reviewed independently and merged together.
Before this, could approvals disappear when the base branch moved ahead and the stack was rebased?
We can’t tell whether approvals always disappeared before. Now, Rebase stack preserves approvals on unchanged code, even in repositories set to dismiss stale approvals.
So the big takeaway is that teams can split up large changes and keep approvals for code that hasn’t changed.
That’s right. Another point to note is that rebased commits remain signed.
