REST API public preview
GitHub’s REST API can now read, add, and edit comments on repository security advisories in public preview. The change matters because advisory discussions often contain the most useful triage context for a vulnerability report, and that context can now be incorporated into automated processing.
The API support also covers advisories created from private vulnerability reports. Previously, the discussion associated with an advisory was reachable only through the web UI.
Repository security advisories
New endpoints allow developers to list comments on a repository security advisory. The results can optionally be limited to comments updated since a specified time, allowing processing to focus on recent discussion activity rather than retrieving comments without that time filter.
Comments can also be created and revised through the REST API. Together, the read, add, and edit operations make it possible to include advisory discussions and important investigation history in automated triage workflows, including workflows involving privately reported vulnerabilities.
Comments count
Repository security advisory responses now include a comments count. This makes it possible to determine whether an advisory has discussion activity before fetching its comments.
Global advisory responses also include the comments count for their linked repository advisory. As a result, comment activity can be identified from either the repository security advisory response or, when linked, the global advisory response.
These fields count non-confidential comments. They are intended to help identify advisories with comment activity before the comments themselves are requested.
