REST and GraphQL APIs
GitHub Copilot code reviews can now be requested through supported REST and GraphQL APIs. This matters because teams can start reviews from the systems they already use rather than limiting requests to a separate interaction.
The API support allows Copilot code review to be incorporated into scripts, workflows, and internal tools. A request made through either supported API can trigger a Copilot review, enabling teams to automate when and where reviews begin.
Review effort level
Each API request can optionally specify the review effort level for that particular review. Teams can therefore select an effort level on a request-by-request basis when integrating reviews into their own tools and processes.
Setting the effort level is optional. If it is included, the selection applies to the review being requested, rather than requiring one effort level to be used for every review.
Balanced is now the default
Balanced is now the default review effort level for new and existing repositories and organizations using Copilot code review. The default change was announced on August 28, 2026, and took effect on September 28, 2026.
Settings that had been explicitly configured were handled differently. If Lite was explicitly selected in the settings, that selection was respected rather than replaced by Balanced.
Generally available
REST and GraphQL review requests, per-request effort selection, and the Balanced default are generally available to Copilot Pro, Pro+, Max, Business, and Enterprise plans.
Together, the changes allow eligible users to trigger Copilot code reviews from team tools while controlling the effort level for individual requests. They also establish Balanced as the standard setting where Lite had not been explicitly selected.
