Backlog

Planning and Implementation

Separating planning from implementation with Claude and Backlog MCP reduced rework in the described workflow. The central rule is not to continue directly from a planning chat by asking Claude to implement the result in the same session.

Instead, Claude first produces a proposed direction. Implementation begins only after the user understands that direction, and it takes place in a new session using the finalized plan.

Long Sessions

The separation addresses a problem encountered during long conversations. Recent instructions may be reflected accurately, while assumptions and decisions established near the beginning can drop out. If planning and implementation remain in one extended session, the implementation may fail to follow important premises agreed earlier.

Planning conversations can also contain several alternatives, changes of mind, and ideas that were ultimately rejected. Continuing into implementation within that session leaves both approved and discarded material in the conversation context, making the operative assumptions less clear.

Starting a new implementation session avoids carrying over the entire discussion. Only the confirmed direction is provided, so the requirements that must be followed become the most recent information in the new session.

Approved Decisions

Passing work into another session requires the plan to be organized in writing. The finalized direction is stored in a Backlog issue rather than being left only in a chat.

This written record also supports retries. If an implementation session produces a result that differs from expectations, another session can be opened and started again from the same documented direction. Because the plan and its history remain attached to the issue, they can be reviewed later and shared with the team.

Backlog MCP

The workflow connects Backlog through MCP to Claude in VS Code. The issue comments are written with the expectation that Claude will read them during the implementation session.

There is no need to copy and paste the plan into the new chat. Instead, the user provides the issue key and asks Claude to review the issue content and the comment containing the agreed direction. This keeps planning discussion separate from execution while giving each implementation attempt the same confirmed starting point.

Poko and TECH Dashboard's own TECH Guide discuss the article's highlights in an AI-generated conversation based on its summary and collected source details.

Why not ask Claude to implement right after planning? What changes when the sessions are split?
Long chats can lose early assumptions or retain rejected ideas. A fresh session loads only the approved plan.
So does that reduce confusion during implementation and also help with retries or reviewing decisions as a team?
Yes. The plan stays in a Backlog issue, so work can restart from the same decisions, and the team can review or share the history later.
Got it—the plan stays in Backlog, and a new session reads it before implementation. That keeps the assumptions clean.
Right. But this workflow depends on reviewing and understanding the plan first, then recording the approved decisions in the issue comments.
