Laravel Routes Explorer

Laravel Routes Explorer is a VSCode extension that displays a Laravel project’s routes in the editor sidebar and provides one-click navigation to the corresponding controller method or route definition. It is intended to reduce the effort required to determine which part of the source code handles a particular URL.

The extension is aimed both at developers who want to try building a VSCode extension and at people who encounter this navigation problem during Laravel development. Knowledge of the VSCode Extension API is not assumed.

VSCode Sidebar

The route list is available from an icon in the VSCode activity bar. Selecting a route opens either the relevant controller method or the location where that route is defined.

This provides a direct connection between endpoint information and implementation. That connection can otherwise be difficult to establish when beginning to examine an unfamiliar project, particularly when route definitions are divided across multiple files rather than being contained only in routes/web.php.

URLs and Controllers

The extension grew out of experience with a three-week internship in Kumamoto. The organization’s regular development work centers on Laravel, and interns work with actual projects written in Laravel.

Many participants arrive after learning basic programming language concepts at university but with almost no knowledge of web frameworks. Before investigating a bug, they first need to identify where the relevant source is located and inspect the current implementation themselves, even when AI is available to assist with research.

A recurring obstacle is matching endpoints to source code. Interns repeatedly need help finding which controller handles a page’s URL. Because route files may be split into several locations, explaining that relationship in a general way is difficult. Laravel Routes Explorer was created to lower this initial knowledge barrier by making the source directly accessible from the endpoint list.

Source Code and vsix

The source code and the vsix package file for Laravel Routes Explorer are published on GitHub. The vsix file is the package format for the VSCode extension.

Poko and TECH Dashboard's own TECH Guide discuss the article's highlights in an AI-generated conversation based on its summary and collected source details.

When I’m working in Laravel and wondering, “Where is this URL handled?”, what changes in my day-to-day work?
The article says you can pick a route in VSCode’s sidebar and jump straight to its controller method or route definition.
Oh, that’s neat! Couldn’t developers jump there directly before?
In the situation described, people had to trace URLs to their code, often with repeated guidance. Route files could also be split across multiple files.
So the big win is reducing that first hurdle—finding the code behind a URL—to a single click!
Exactly. Another useful detail is that the source code and VSIX package are available on GitHub.
